BIOGRAPHY
Jeff was born in Houston, Texas. He grew up in St. Croix (USVI), Nebraska, Saudi Arabia benefiting from his father's career as a chemical engineer working in the petroleum industry. Jeff attended boarding school at the Berkshire School in Massachusetts. He moved back to Texas to complete his undergraduate work and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating, Jeff conducted research on gravity sensing organs of newts at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He received a Master and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Pathology & Microbiology from Texas A&M University. After conducting postdoctoral research on the biochemistry of viruses, he became a middle school science teacher at Hawley Middle School in Granville County, North Carolina. He has served as a science teacher, soccer coach, mentor, substitute bus driver and team leader. Jeff was recognized at the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year at Hawley Middle School. In 2015, he taught LEGO robotics as part of the county’s STEM summer camp. He also has been a Duke TIP instructor from 2010-2012 and an instructor for the University of Phoenix from 2011 to 2015. Jeff served on Hawley’s School Leadership Team from 2007-2019. Jeff is currently completing a Master of School Administration degree through the award-winning North Carolina State Principal Preparation Program. For the 2019-2020 school year, Jeff has served as Principal Resident at JF Webb High School in Oxford, NC. He expects to graduate with his MSA from NC State University on May 8, 2020.
Jeff's wife, Amber, works for North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS). Jeff's son, Ethan, also attends Granville County Schools and is expected to graduate in 2023. Jeff's daughter, Erin, graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Hillside High School in Durham and is studying political science at University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He has 4 cats and two energetic dogs (Corgi and Belgian Malinois).
Growing up Jeff enjoyed scuba diving, baseball and soccer player, and running. He participated in church and other community events supporting community gardens, social/emotional well being, and volunteerism. Jeff continues to play in an adult soccer league and also enjoys reading, jogging, hiking, and camping. He hopes to run his first marathon in 2020.
